When I order a purchase online, it seems like for the next month, I see similar items pop up as ads whenever I am browsing the Internet. I find this disconcerting to say the least. Big Brother from George Orwell’s 1984 seemed so remotely possible when that book was required high school reading (I will NOT tell you how long ago that was!), but Big Brother is here and truly is watching.Property and Casualty insurance companies have become the latest to use Big Brother techniques. In particular, many auto policy offerings, including our flagship product from Travelers Insurance, are using a virtual black box of a plug-in technology to your car’s computer or a cellphone app to monitor how you drive in exchange for a discount to your premium.Recently, I found an article online: (https://doi.org/10.1111/poms.13023) discussing a study performed by Washington University in St. Louis which found that the Big Brother-like activities of monitoring your driving are not only saving money for consumers in terms of lower insurance premiums, but they are reducing the risks which cause accidents (which is saving the insurance companies even bigger dollars in terms of claims payments). So, although I react poorly when I realize that Internet marketing companies know that I am buying fall clothing or searching for computer peripherals, I have to admit I feel that a greater good is going on that people are being kept safer because the roads and highways have safer drivers occupying them.For the next four weeks, I will be posting on Social Media information about Travelers’ program called IntelliDrive which can save Travelers’ insureds premium on their auto policies.
